What Is the Place of Wonder in Nature Study?

Nature study begins with looking. Children notice the shape of a leaf, the track of an insect, the color of the sky, or the sound of a bird before they rush to label everything.
Observation Comes Before Explanation
Nature study begins with looking. Children notice the shape of a leaf, the track of an insect, the color of the sky, or the sound of a bird before they rush to label everything.
This is not anti-science. It is the beginning of good science: careful attention to what is actually there.
Creation as Gift
For Christian families, nature study also trains gratitude. The created world is not raw material only; it is a gift that declares the wisdom and generosity of God.
A child who learns to wonder is being prepared to learn deeply. Wonder keeps knowledge from becoming cold and keeps curiosity connected to praise.
